Helping Families Protect Themselves Through Education

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is when someone uses some type of electronic device to harass, humiliate, post false information, embarrass, impersonate, or threaten another.

Cyberbullying can happen via the computer, PDA, or cell phone. The impact is immediate and can spread exponentially at the click of a mouse.  It differs from bullying in person in that the size of the group of witnesses/recipients is unknown and by passing on emails and notes the bullying continues.  Parents and those in teens lives need to have discussions on how to handle cyberbullying.  Victims of cyberbullying should:

Not respond to the person(s) sending the offending material
Report it to their parents and teachers at school as soon as possible
Adults need to take the situation seriously and take action
